California's beef industry is a major part of the California economy. The $1.42 Billion of cattle sales is 7.8 percent of all agricultural production and 28 percent of the state's livestock and poultry sales. These percentages have increased over the past few years as cattle prices have increased and crop prices and production levels in California have remained level. Profitability of the California agricultural economy is directly related to performance in the livestock sector.

These figures represent only a portion of the total economic impact of the beef industry. Including the meat processing sector, an estimated 26,130 jobs and $1.635 million of personal income are generated each year in California by the beef industry. Details the size of the beef industry from the production, processing, preparation, and transportation involved in getting beef to consumers are available here.
